Renaissance Morgan Farm History
|
In 1974 after Emily retired from teaching, she talked Leonard into getting a
horse or two so that he would not have so much grass to cut. We
purchased our first Morgan gelding and a plan for a breeding farm began
when we registered our farm prefix - Renaissance.
Our initial show and breeding stock
included a yearling, Pinehaven Sparkell,
who became an International Park
Saddle Champion, and a weanling,
Pinehaven Renaissance, who won Grand
National World Championships in Park
Saddle and Harness as a 2, 3, and 4 year-
old, numerous Open Park Saddle
Championships, and the World Park
Saddle Championship two times. Our
Renaissance Rogue was pinned
Grand National four year-old gelding in
1980.
During this time, because we were adding to our “indoor family”, many
barn and show activities went to the back burner. By 1984, we felt it was
time to get serious about the farm so we hired Todd Darling as our trainer.
He has been with us ever since. All of us had great fun in the show ring and
with the horses at home. Our two favorite show horses were Renaissance
Firefly, a multi-champion in English Pleasure, Harness, and Saddle, and
Nemours Royal Beau, a Grand National Classic Pleasure Driving
Champion.
Undoubtedly, the most exciting of our show horses was Renaissance
Topaz, a many times Champion Roadster Under Saddle at the Grand
National. She brought many people ringside to witness her exciting classes.
Her progeny form the nucleus of our breeding program and show great
promise and excitement.
Our continuing commitment to the Morgan world has seen Emily organizing
numerous club open barns around the state and Leonard as Vice President
of the Morgan Breeders Association and co-founder of the Morgan
Trotting Association. Leonard has also served as director on many boards
including Gold Cup, Michigan Justin Morgan Horse Association, and
Region 3 Director of the American Morgan Horse Association. He is now
a Director Emeritus of the American Morgan Horse Association and has
been President of Michigan Morgan Horse Breeders Futurity for many,
many years.
Our major focus of late has been the Gala Event to increase prize money
for the futurity and to make our Michigan Fall Horse Show and Futurity a
fun, but significant showcase for Morgan breeding stock in the Midwest.
